Atkinson’s WRC dream could be over

Australian Chris Atkinson’s long-awaited return to the World Rally Championship has been postponed yet again after it emerged that he won’t be taking up his entry for Rally Sweden next month.

The former Subaru WRC driver last contested a WRC round in 2009, and was entered to drive a Subaru on the Swedish event, however budget problems have ended those plans.

“There are a few things that I’m working on but I can’t really say,” Atkinson told World Rally Radio. “But the WRC is the only option for my career, I’m at a turning point now and I’ve got to make the most of it. There are still only a few quick guys out there and the WRC is the only way to show what you’ve got. The championship is in a good position right now with Ford staying and Volkswagen coming back next year.” 

His co-driver, Belgian Stephane Prevot, hinted that Atkinson's WRC dream may be over.

"It's frustrating, of course .... I'm sure we could have done things well.

"But it has been three years since he was in the WRC, and during this time young drivers with budgets have arrived. Our tour seems past ..." Prevot said on one website.
