New Zealander Andrew Hawkeswood has a new toy, and it could make its debut at this year’s Rally of Otago on May 10 and 11.

The car is no ordinary rally car either, but a Group B replica Audi Quattro S1, as the attached photos doing the rounds of the internet show.

"It is an Audi S1,” Hawkeswood says. “We have shortened the shell and it has Subaru Impreza C spec running gear, with a 5 cylinder Audi engine,” he said.

The word is that it’s a ‘real deal’ Group B Quattro motor, and that the car may debut in the Rally Xtreme component of the Otago Rally.

Hawkeswood’s most recent rally car was a 900 horsepower Lancer Evo which he used to contest the Race To The Sky hillclimb at Queenstown, in New Zealand’s south island.

With former Audi works driver Michele Mouton contesting the Otago Rally for the first time this year, it will be interesting to see what the French lady thinks of Hawkeswood’s toy – and if she’ll get to have a drive of it…….
