Chris Atkinson leads Rally Finland going into the first full day after he was fastest in Thursday evening's superspecial stage.
The Subaru driver beat the Ford Focus of local Jari-Matti Latvala on the opening stage, setting a time that not even the championship leaders could beat.
Championship leader Marcus Gronholm was second after edging out arch rival Sebastien Loeb in their battle. Dani Sordo and Petter Solberg were next, followed by Latvala in sixth.
The rally gets into full flow on Friday morning (Finnish time), with Gronholm the first car on the road.
