Japan’s Katsu Taguchi and Australian co-driver, Mark Stacey, have won the first round of the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship in New Caledonia.

Driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9, the pair took victory by nearly two minutes, beating home the Australian duo of Dean Herridge and Chris Murphy in a Subaru Impreza WRX STI.

Fellow Australians, Scott Pedder and Glen Weston, held second place for much of the event in their MRF Tyres-sponsored Lancer Evo 9, until an off-road excursion in the wet conditions put them out of the event. Pedder called it the slowest accident of his career.

Frenchman Jean-Louis Leyraud, with Australian Bill Hayes calling the pacenotes, was fourth, while the Kiwi pairing of Brian Green and Fleur Pedersen took fifth.

The next round of the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship is the Rally of Canberra, on May 9-11.
