Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) President, Andrew Papadopoulos, and MotorSport New Zealand President (MSNZ), Shayne Harris, have announced that the two organisations plan to work together to develop shared technical regulations for new rally car categories.
CAMS and MSNZ will work together to develop an agreed technical framework for a ‘Super 4WD’ Rally Car based on a draft set of conceptual technical regulations developed by MSNZ.
“Our desire to co-operate in the development of common regulations arises from our shared assessment that the FIA Group N 4WD formula, which has been a mainstay of rally competitions in both countries for many years, is now ageing rapidly and an affordable alternative needs to be identified,” Papadopoulos said.
MSNZ President Mr Harris said: “New Zealand and Australia have much in common in rallying. Our competitors are regularly making trips across the Tasman to compete. Having a common set of technical rules around our rally car categories is a sensible alignment that will assist in developing the sport in both our countries by creating the kind of critical mass needed to help reduce costs, while promoting an easier exchange of competitors and ideas.”
These draft regulations retain compliance with the FIA’s safety regulations for rally vehicles, but will permit conversion of a 2WD production car to 4WD using a template formula and a number of common parts.
It is planned to ensure the category can be recognised by the FIA and would be eligible to compete in international events in both countries.
