A cold and wintery blast will greet competitors in this weekend’s third round of the 2011 Shannons Insurance ACT Regional Rally Series, the Bega Valley Rally, as they venture into the forests south of Eden on the NSW far south coast.

The Bega Rally has a long history dating back to the 60’s when it was a round of the Australian Rally Championship. This time the event will be a round of the NSW and Victorian State championships as well as the Shannon ACT series but competitors will be trying just as hard to win the event as the rally heroes of the past like George Fury, Greg Carr, Geoff Portman and Wayne Bell, as the best drivers from both states battle it out for the outright win.

With the postponement of round 2 of the series, all crews are eager to get back out and continue the race to the title. After the first round, which saw 2009 ACT Champion Michael Barrett and co-driver Adrian Coppin take the silverware home in the Gold Cup Category, the Cullen brothers and Jon Parker are keen to battle for outright honours, with Barrett and Coppin electing to sit this round out.

In the Clubman series, Canberra’s Meng Chung has shown increased speed in his Honda Integra Type R and will have experienced co-driver Nick Vardos calling the notes for him this weekend. The pairing took top honours in both the Clubman and Silver Cup categories at the first round and are looking to repeat the job at Bega but they are set for a hard battle with senior competitor Jon Waterhouse driving his Subaru WRX.

Regular co-driver Andrew Buerckner turned his hand to driving in round 1 and showed everyone in the Novice series how it’s done, taking the win in a turbo charged Mazda MX5. Buerckner has elected not to compete and will officiate at the Bega event to secure his points at this round as he looks to increase his lead in the championship.

The first car will depart the Snug Cove Wharf in Eden at 8am on Saturday morning. Follow all the Bega Valley Rally results live on the day at www.begavalleyrally.com.au/results. Spectator guides and entry lists will be available from the event headquarters, Eden Fisherman Club on Saturday, 11 June.
