Block and his co-driver Alex Gelsomino were uninjured, but their MWRT Fiesta sustained significant damage and was unable to continue.
Block recovered from a rocky start of a flat tyre during Friday’s Northwest Passage (Stage 1) to take the overall lead early Saturday on the Fir Mountain Long stage.
Block started the day 23 seconds behind the leader, but had rebounded to take a nine second advantage after six stages. Clearly Block’s Monster World Rally Team Fiesta was class of the field and appeared headed for a podium result if not victory.
Unfortunately Block fell victim to a particularly nasty corner, which earlier in the day claimed Vermont Motorsports driver and fellow championship contender Dave Mirra.
For Block and his team there is little time to dwell on the frustrations of a DNF in Oregon as they prepare to head to Portugal for the WRC event May 28-30. Next up for the Monster World Rally Team’s Rally America program is the Susquehannock Trail Rally June 4-5.
