Coffs Harbour is rumoured to be the likely choice to host the NSW round of the 2008 Australian Rally Championship, following news that the Great Lakes Rally will not run this year.

Although Australian Rally Commission chairman, Col Trinder, would not speculate on where the replacement event would be held, RallySport Magazine understands that Coffs Harbour is likely to get the nod.

“The Commission has been working for some months with competitors, officials, commercial partners and organisers about strengthening the support base from State competitors for the ARC competition in NSW,” Trinder said.

“The Commission sees a successful event in NSW as pivotal to the conduct of a strong national championship. There will be some exciting news to announce in the next week.

“Organisers are working on some of the details for the 2008 event and the Commission intends to do them the courtesy of completing that work before an announcement is made,” he added.

The Great Lakes Rally ran for the one and only time last September.

Coffs Harbour last ran a round of the Australian Rally Championship in 2000. The event had been a round of the ARC for 10 years, and its axing was widely disapproved of.

Under the reigns of Bob Halpin, the Coffs event was often voted the best in the country by competitors, and a return to the picturesque location would be welcomed by competitors, spectators and the media alike.
