Following the debut appearance in competition at the Malton Forest Stages Rally of the Proton Iriz R5 prototype, Chris Mellors, proprietor of MEM Motorsport, gave more details of the project on Absolute Rally podcast. MEM Motorsport have been developing this car on behalf of Proton. He explained he is working with the FIA with a view to homologation in March 2018, after the model has first been homologated into Group A.
The chosen engine for the car is the Mitsubishi 4B11 unit, as used by the Mitsubishi Evo X and the Hyundai i20.
Suppliers are Xtrac transmission, Cosworth electronics, Reiger suspension and Brembo brakes. One special plan for the car is to make homologation for both left and right hand drive versions of the R5. So far about 1000km of testing has been carried out, mainly by Ollie Mellors, while on one test Marcus Gronholm attended for a day and gave advice based on his experiences on similar cars with Volkswagen and Skoda. Mellors has been working with Proton on rally car work for 17 years. He finished third overall on last weekend's Malton Forest Rally, beaten only by two World Rally Cars, and jointly leading overall after the first stage.
