British Rally Champion, Guy Wilks and co-driver Phil Pugh had a disappointing end to their first Australian rally when they were forced to retire from Heat 2 of Rally of Canberra with mechanical failure.

Wilks held a superb fifth overall after Heat 2 in his front wheel drive Honda Civic Type R R3 but driveshaft failure halted his charge around 20 km into Sunday's 28 km opening stage.

"It's a real shame," Wilks said. "Everything was going well and we had just passed a car in the stage to move up to fourth place."

"I'm disappointed - but even more so for the guys at JAS Motorsport. They have done a great job with the car and I was determined to get a result for them and Honda Australia."

The pair arrived back in Britain today in time for a tarmac test with Mitsubishi Motors UK on Wednesday.

Their next event, The Jim Clark Rally - round two of the British Rally Championship - takes places in Berwickshire from May 23 - 25.
