I turned six-years-old during the 1976 Southern Cross International Rally, the event that saw Ford Australia enter a pair of works-prepared Escort RS1800s for their star drivers, Timo Makinen and Roger Clark.
I was at that Port Macquarie-based event, and although my recollections of the rally are vague, I still have a t-shirt in my vast collection that depicts one of those Escorts.
While my passion for the colour scheme on the two works Escorts has long remained, I hadn’t really thought too much about those cars until I came across a Facebook page that catalogued Jim Hewlett’s restoration of one of them.
