A driver in the Mt Buller Sprint has died after a serious accident on the first day of the three-day event, the Herald Sun has reported.

"The car was taking part in the Mt Buller Sprint when it veered off the road sometime between 3.30pm and 4.30pm , Rural Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the accident happened about 8km from the Mt Buller summit.
The passenger is being airlifted to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the spokeswoman said.

The Mt Buller Sprint takes place over three days and involves 10, 16km sprints by V8 engine cars up the winding alpine road to the top of the mountain.

There are 132 turns along the Mt Buller Tourist Road route.

A spokeswoman for the event declined to comment on the incident.

She said race officials were being briefed by the Confederation of Australian Motorsport."
