The 2020 Shannons Adelaide Rally is off to a flying start, months before the event takes place. Almost 60 cars have entered in the two weeks since entries opened, more than twice the number for the same time last year, when the event featured 324 vehicles. “We’ve seen a surge in interest, from interstate as well as within South Australia,” says Event Director Tim Possingham. “As border restrictions are starting to ease, people are seeing the Adelaide Rally as an opportunity to get out and enjoy their cars on some of our finest driving roads.” Entries so far include some familiar cars and drivers, as well as a significant number of first-time entrants in vehicles ranging from ex-World Rally Championship cars and purpose-built tarmac racers to muscle cars, Minis and a turbocharged 1983 Volvo. “We’ve fielded so many enquiries from car enthusiasts saying 2020 is the year they do the Rally,” Possingham says. “It’s obviously been on a lot of bucket lists and there are a number of fresh builds coming out of people’s garages as well as some well established cars returning to the event. If entries continue to come in at this rate we will reach our cut-off of 340 entries well before November.” Key to the growing fields in the Adelaide Rally is the choice of categories available to suit just about any car and driver. In the non-competitive categories, the single-day Prima Tour and three-day Main Tour categories cater for those who want the freedom of closed-road stages, while Spirit Tour requires helmets and basic safety gear and allows drivers to reach 120kmh on closed roads. Challenge is a competitive class that requires a half cage and imposes a 130kmh limit – which gives plenty of scope for drivers to explore the limits on the tight and winding roads that make up the event. Competition, like Challenge is open to Classic and Modern machinery and delivers four days of action in the hills and valleys surrounding Adelaide. Early Bird pricing is available until June 30 and entries can be submitted at www.adelaiderally.com.au Related news: https://rallysportmag.com/feature-ex-tte-toyota-celica-gt-four/
