number of 80 crews permitted, the field is almost three quarters full of local and
interstate crews who are looking forward to tackling the tight and twisty roads of the
McLaren Vale wine region, south of Adelaide on Sunday, June 29.
The field already includes some exotic crowd pleasers. Leading the pack is last year’s Classic Adelaide winner, Kevin Weeks, in his stunning black Supaloc Racing 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera Coupe.
Fresh from a disappointing Targa Tasmania, where a blown tyre deflated his chances whilst holding second spot outright, Kevin and co-driver Bec Crunkhorne will be thrilling the local crowds as they explore the limits of the all-wheel drive V10 Gallardo.
Returning to rallying after competing and turning heads in the New South Wales’ Super
Sprint Championships, is the Hiflex Australia Racing team entry of Grant Fowler and
Peter McAlpine in their unique Porsche 993 Turbo S. The car is one of only seven
limited release Turbo S 993’s that were built in light weight “Clubspec” configuration.
According to an enthusiastic Grant, “the car was built to rally, and rally with it we
certainly will”!
The twin turbo 993 engine is a direct descendant of the mighty 911 GT1 Le
Mans sports car of the late 90’s and develops around 370 kilowatts (500
bhp). With a top speed of more than 300 kmh, the all-wheel drive Porsche is an
exciting addition to the already extensive field which includes several
other Porsches along with a Ferrari 360 Challenge, a classic Mustang, several
Escorts and the usual gaggle of Lancer Evo’s and Subaru WRX’s.
The asp Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally is Round 3 of the South Australian Rally
Championship and will be run over 10 special bitumen stages on June 29, based around
Penny’s Hill Winery.
