FIA confirms registration rule change

Following enquiries after the FIA published post-Sardinia WRC points standings asking why Kevin Abbring was allowed to score manufacturer championship points on this occasion, but not at Portugal, it has been confirmed that Hyundai have now been granted a special waiver.  

FIA’s Sporting Regulations require that a WRC Team entry must be in a car of the same latest homologation specification as those used by drivers in their same Manufacturers Team entry.  

Like in Portugal, Hyundai Motorsport entered two cars for their secondary “N” team, for Thierry Neuville in a 2016 New Generation car, and for Abbring in a 2015 car for Sardinia.  

In Portugal, it was pronounced that Abbring’s car was irregularly eligible for team points, but in Sardinia his car’s eligibility was accepted.  The FIA has stated: “They now have a waiver for the rest of the season”.
