Finnish rally supremo Jarmo Mahonen has been appointed president of the FIA's World Rally Championship Commission.

The announcement was made by FIA president Jean Todt after the FIA General Assembly in Paris on Friday. Mahonen will replace outgoing president Morrie Chandler who has held the position since 2006.

The World Rally Championship commission is an elected group of members who are responsible for determining the rules, regulations and policies applicable to the running of the WRC.

As managing director of AKK, the company which organises and promotes Rally Finland, Mahonen is the man behind one of the most successful rounds of the World Rally Championship. Now he will head up the nine-strong team of experts responsible for shaping the future direction of the sport.

Former World Rally Champion co-driver Robert Reid has been appointed WRCC Vice President. Reid, from Scotland, won the 2001 title alongside Richard Burns.
