While the all-new Commodores strode to a dominant victory after 14 days and nearly 20,000 kilometres, the best the works Cortinas could achieve was a solitary fifth place.
Forty-five years on from an event that is never likely to be repeated – at least not to the same tiresome schedule – factory driver, Dave Morrow, has shared his experiences of the event aboard the number nine Cortina.
Morrow teamed with Ford’s number one pairing, Greg Carr and Fred Gocentas, for the event, and believes that had things been different, the Cortina could well have had the measure of the Commodores.
As has often been the case with the Blue Oval’s motorsport aspirations, it was a case of too little, too late.
