Ford’s 1979 Repco assault: what might have been

There’s been dozens of stories written about Holden’s game-changing 1-2-3 in the 1979 Repco Reliability Trial, but very little is known about Ford’s somewhat half-hearted efforts.

While the all-new Commodores strode to a dominant victory after 14 days and nearly 20,000 kilometres, the best the works Cortinas could achieve was a solitary fifth place.

Morrow teamed with Ford’s number one pairing, Greg Carr and Fred Gocentas, for the event, and believes that had things been different, the Cortina could well have had the measure of the Commodores.

As has often been the case with the Blue Oval’s motorsport aspirations, it was a case of too little, too late.
