Australian Rally Championship youngsters Glen and Matt Raymond retired from Heat 1 of the Rally of Canberra after a promising start.

The pair posted the seventh fastest stage time on SS2, taking them to an impressive fiftth outright.

But on the notorious Mineshaft stage their day was brought to a bone crushing end.

"We had negotiated all the notorious sections of the Mineshaft stage without incident and I felt we had the speed to jump higher up the outright results, so I upped the pace to put some pressure on the guys ahead," Glen Raymond said.  "As a result we launched the Subaru over a small crest, which in our notes barley rated a mention, and landed really hard on the front end."

The high speed impact resulted in damage to the radiator and the engine oil cooler, instantly crippling the Bendigo Bank Subaru STI, and leaving the driver and co-driver bruised and sore.

The brothers were aiming to restart in Heat 2 after their service crew set about repairing the damage.
