Australian Dean Herridge leads the Group N category of Telstra Rally Australia after the first day’s stages, with only tonight’s Super Special Stages at Gloucester Park to run.
But Herridge and co-driver Bill Hayes are in a terrific battle with Group N specialist Toshi Arai and Aki Teiskonen, both in Subarus, and the Mitsubishi of Mirco Baldacci.
Herridge leads by just 2.5 seconds after nine stages of the event, but less than 30 seconds cover his rivals.
Aside from a noisy gearbox today, Herridge has had a troublefree run, but knows that Rally Australia is a long event and that anything can happen.
In both 2004 and 2005 he looked to have a Group N victory within his grasp until engine failures forced his retirement.
