The WRC Promoter has refused to be drawn on the chances of Rally New Zealand being included in the 2021 World Rally Championship. The COVID-19 pandemic means that it is now highly unlikely that September's Rally New Zealand will feature as part of any revised 2020 WRC calendar – should the WRC get up and running at all again this year. New Zealand's one-off return to the WRC could well be over before it even had a chance to begin, so RallySport Magazine asked if there was a chance that the rally could, instead, form part of the 2021 calendar. "It is too early to talk about any decision regarding Rally New Zealand in 2020 – and, by extension, that means we’re not in a position to talk about the rally being included in the 2021 calendar," WRC Communications Manager, Mark Wilford, told RSM. "The postponement of upcoming events in Argentina, Portugal and Italy means many decisions remain regarding this year’s schedule, which is our priority." WRC Promoter boss, Oliver Ciesla, added:
"We are discussing all options, as you can imagine. However, it is too early making a decision on Rally NZ 2020."

Rally New Zealand CEO, Michael Goldstein, would not be drawn on the event's future either. “Rally New Zealand is continuing to prepare to host a leg of the World Rally Championships in Auckland in September," he said. "Of course there is currently major global uncertainty affecting everyone, including the 2020 World Rally Championship. "Over the coming weeks we will continue to liaise closely with local and central Government agencies as as the WRC Promoter and the FIA.” Should the pandemic scupper any hope of Rally New Zealand appearing on the 2020 calendar, it would seem only fair that the event be included for 2021. We'll wait and see if the WRC comes to the party and grants NZ another chance.
