Jan Kopecky headed a remarkable feast of record breaking performances at Barum Czech Rally Zlin, sixth round of the FIA’s 2019 European Rally Championship.
Kopecky also won the event for the fifth successive time, gained the Czech national title and headed Skoda’s top 10 finishers on this event.
Through the two-day all asphalt event he avoided the series of misfortunes of rivals, many of whom retired through crashes.
Early challenges came from the Russians Nikolaj Gryazin (Skoda) and Alexey Lukyanuk (Citroen), both of whom fell back with punctures – Gryazin later crashing heavily.
Kopecky (pictured above) then cruised to victory, well ahead of a fierce battle for second place between Filip Mares and Chris Ingram. Mares finally beat Ingram by 0.3 second.
Top ERC championship contenders Lukyanuk and Lukasz Habaj had a fruitless weekend (retiring with a damaged roll cage).
With two events to go, English driver Chris Ingram is the new ERC leader by one point, ahead of Lukyanuk. Japanese driver Hiroki Arai withdrew with tyre troubles
There was drama in the Junior two-wheel drive ERC championship on the final stage when the stage was halted because of a blockage, just at the moment when Efren Llarena had been four seconds behind the class leader Jean Baptiste Franceschi.
Franceschi was the only driver to complete the stage in the category, but was delayed by a technical problem.
The Stewards decided to give Franceschi a one-minute penalty, which give Llarena the class win and the class title, and stopped Franceschi being able to say he had won the Junior 2WD championship.
The ERC2 two-wheel drive category was won by the Abarth 124 of Andrea Nucita. His fellow Abarth driver, Zelinda Melegari, was hospitalised after a serious accident.
