Les Walkden Rallying driver, Tony Longhurst, celebrated a unique milestone at the Tasmanian Tarmac Challenge last weekend.

Exactly 20 years since his first Bathurst 1000 victory, the Gold Coast driver celebrated his first-ever tarmac rally win.

Driving a Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Longhurst and co-driver, Jahmeil Taylor, finished the first Heat of the event in second place, then upped their speed to take victory on day two of the 13 stage, 200 kilometre rally.

Since retiring from circuit racing, Longhurst has found a real niche in tarmac rallying, and has quickly shown that the ability he had on the track has transferred over to the rally stages.

“I’m certainly enjoying rallying as much as I enjoyed circuit race when I was in the prime of my career in the 1990s,” Longhurst said. “In the last few years, driving around a circuit hundreds of times became quite stale, so I’ve really enjoyed the challenge of rallying.”

Longhurst’s debut Bathurst win came in 1988, with co-driver Tomas Mezera, at the wheel of a Ford Sierra RS500.
