The elder Luff, who had his brother Jamie alongside, was seeded third in the event, surrounded by early Mitsubishi Lancer Evos.

It was those Mitsubishis who took the early rally lead, with Tim Wilkins and Brian Hunt at the top through the first two stages, but on the third, Mile Creek East, the Luffs reached the top.

From then on, the five remaining stages were fought tooth and nail, with several lead changes between the two crews.
