Fresh from a career best result at the recent Possum Bourne Memorial Rally, Stephen Barker is ready for another new challenge in the shape of the final round of the New Zealand Rally Championship, Rally Nelson.

Barker stunned many onlookers by taking a creditable third place overall in the Rintoul Civil Evo 7 and is hoping to carry his pace into the championship finale.

Like every round of the championship to date, Barker has not contested the Nelson event before is unsure exactly what to expect.

“I expect tyre choice to be critical with being able to only run  one spare on a rally that I have been told is extremely hard on tyres. Once again I have never done this rally before and I’m unsure what I’m in for until recce.” Says Barker.

Locked in a tight battle with Glenn Inkster for second place in the open class championship, Barker’s main aim will be to try and defend the position, but is expecting a good battle with Inkster for the position.

With that in mind, Barker and co-driver Brett Lightfoot are looking for a conservative run through day one, playing it safe to ensure a damage free finish and then attack and have fun on the final day.

“The whole Stephen Barker Motorsport team is still on a high after a good result at the Possum Bourne Memorial Rally and we are hoping to finish the final round of the NZRC on a high before beginning the search for 2010 funding.” Comments Barker.

The Rally Nelson will see Barker cover 275 kilometres of special stages, split into two days and 12 special stages.
