The superb forest roads around Bairnsdale in Victoria were the home of the Akademos Rally for over 20 years in the 1970s, 80s and 90s and they will once again provide a home for state level competition when the Melbourne University Car Club embarks on the task of organising two rounds of the 2007 Victorian Rally Championship.

While the Akademos Rally will still run as a pacenoted event in the Alexandra region, a new event – The East Gippsland Stages -  will take over the traditional May date.

Planning is well under way for a day-night event starting around midday on Saturday in Bairnsdale.  With the early sunset at that time of year, competitors should begin to arrive at the finish by 9.00pm.

With about 120km of special stage to keep crews happy, the organisers are looking forward to the next generation of rally competitor becoming familiar with this fabulous rally area.

Already a great deal of enthusiasm has been shown in the East Gippsland region with the prospect of competition returning to this area of the state.

Consideration had been given to making the event a pacenoted affair, but a late finish on the Sunday (as per the Akademos Rally) would make it difficult for crews to return home for work the following day.

The Akademos Rally will now be held in October, following the now-traditional pacenoted format in the Rubicon Forest.
