The last time was way back in 1995, when Peter Whitten and the then Australian Rallysport News team built a Mazda 323 GTX from the ground up, with the help of many businesses within the rallying fraternity.
We again planned to utilise the vast amount of expertise, knowledge, skills and quality workmanship of those close to us in the rallying community.
Lots of time was spent deciding what our car of choice would be, whether it would be front-wheel-drive or all-wheel drive.
Our criteria was to have a car that was relatively cheap to build and run, reliable, modern and with lots of parts available.
Rear-wheel-drive was never really an option due to the lack of modern cars built in rear-drive configuration. Back in the late 20th century, a rear-drive car was a solid option; cars like the Ford Escort, Datsuns 1600 and Stanza, and various Toyotas were popular and readily available in paddocks, garages, and streets.
