Planning is well underway for the Australian leg of the 2011 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), Rally Australia, which will be staged in and around the Coffs Coast on 8 to 11 September 2011.

Rally Australia has set up an office on Gordon Street, Coffs Harbour to provide a base for this exciting international motorsport event.

Rally Australia Chairman Graham Fountain said his staff were excited to have a local base and meet with Coffs Harbour locals to deliver this fantastic event to the region.

“With our office now open, the Rally Australia staff will commence meeting with community organisations, local businesses and residents to provide them with information about the event and to share ideas for 2011,” he said.

Mr Fountain has recently been appointed Chairman of Rally Australia and has significant experience in the motorsport arena, having spent three years as CEO of the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS), motorsport’s national governing authority. His current position is Chief Executive Officer and Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Fire & Emergency Services Board in Victoria, so good governance, community engagement, public safety and logistics form part of his day-to-day priorities and he will use this experience in his Rally Australia role.

He will be joined by a team of people in the Rally Australia office who are responsible for event operations, marketing and community relations.
Rally Australia is made possible with support from the NSW Government through Events New South Wales, Coffs Harbour City Council, Bellingen Shire Council, Clarence Valley Council, Nambucca Shire Council and Forests NSW.

The event will provide worldwide benefits to the local community through event, competitor, team and spectator expenditure, exposure on international television to hundreds of millions of viewers, and local employment opportunities.

Rally Australia generated up to $16.9 million in new economic activity for the Northern Rivers region in 2009.

Coffs Harbour is no stranger to motorsport, having successfully staged legs of the Australian Rally Championships and International Southern Cross Rally in past years.

Consultation with the community is now commencing and once feedback is received, the course will be finalised and announced along with spectator points, contracting opportunities and volunteer and staffing information.
