Rally Recall: Telstra Rally Australia 2000

Twenty years ago, we witnesses one of the most famous Rally Australia battles – and it was one filled with tactics. Martin Holmes was there to capture every controversial detail.

After the victory celebrations in Australia it looked like Tommi Makinen was back again winning for the first time since Monte Carlo, but without the chance of a fifth World title.

On the next morning, however, he was excluded from the event because of irregularities with the Mitsubishi's turbocharger.

Marcus Gronholm rose from second and is now the favourite to win the World Drivers' series, his only challenger now being Richard Burns.

This was the rally when the winning drivers spent two days trying to go slowly, hoping for a favourable starting position on the third day.

It was a bizarre affair, being forced to adopt the usual starting order system in circumstances which are far from ordinary.
