Reid and co-driver Michelle Murphy were getting to grips with their brand new Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6 and were competing in just its fourth round of the Australian Rally Championship (ARC).
The Saxon Safari Tasmania was the last round of the championship that year and the pair were looking for a solid end to their season, having been steadily improving with the car since debuting it in Queensland in June.
Reid was by this point a longtime competitor, a regular top 10 and often top five runner at Australia’s top level.
“I’d been driving every day for eight days coming into the rally,” Reid explained of the event build-up playing his part in the famous Holden Precision Driving Team.
But a promising start resulted in the horrible accident that put an end to Reid and Murphy's rally, and the once-new Mitsubishi.
It wasn’t just a regular run-of-the-mill accident, though.
The rallying Gods were on the side of Stewart, Michelle, and all in rallying that day.
