The pair will compete in Selley’s ex SRTA 2003 Subaru STI, previously campaigned by Webb’s regular driver, Steve Glenney. “I have a real soft spot for this car”, said Webb who co-drove for Glenney in the same car in the 2005 and 2006 Australian Rally Championships. “My first outright ARC stage and event wins came in this car in 2006” recalls Webb.
“Steve and I took outright victory in this car in the 2006 Rally of South Australia and had been running second in Targa Tasmania in the same year until scrutineers deemed our tyres unsafe on the final day”, Webb recalls. “So the memories and bitter sweet,” he said.
Selley has campaigned the car in the 2007, 2008 and 2009 South Australian Rally Championships, taking outright honours in each year. Although the Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally is also a round of the SARC, the pair will not be contesting that series this year. “It’s time to move on to new challenges,” said Selley.
“If we were to run in the SARC division we would have to comply with the PRC rules and run a turbo restrictor. We did that last year and were cross-entered in the open division. Somehow we posted a couple of second fastest stage times in the open division against the unrestricted cars and finished 3rd outright but it was a major handicap. This time we will run in M2 and pitch ourselves against the big guns,” said Selley.
Although they have known each other for some time, this will be the first rally in which the pair compete as a team.
“Bernie is the consummate co-driver,” said Selley. “He has won this event before with Steve. Being a relative newcomer to tarmac, I know there are many areas for improvement and I’m very excited to get the chance to tap into Bernie’s huge experience with notes, road position and set-up.”
Webb who has been competing in recent times with Selley’s South Australian rival, Brett Kipling, has been watching Selley’s progress for some time.
“Matt is a capable and strategic driver and the crew at Norwood Auto Services who prepare the car have a brilliant success rate. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to work with such a results driven team,” Webb remarked.
