The fifth round of the City Subaru Queensland Rally Championship will be held this Saturday with the Goodyear Auto Service Centre Classic Rally, offering competitors 160 competitive kilometres of testing drivers’ roads.

Traditionally the venue for the final event of the year, a date change has seen the Gallangowan venue move away from the heat of summer in December to a more mild September weekend.

A healthy field of 43 entries consisting of the QRC field of 30 cars and another 13 Clubman/Gemini crews will kick off from the township of Kilcoy on Saturday morning, before contesting stages on the way to Jimna Forest, then onto Gallangowan Forest for the afternoon and night-time stages.

The rally gets into full swing straight away with a 21 kilometre test appropriately named ‘Have A Go”! Nine other stages make up the event.

Leading the field away are the two crews currently on top of the points-table.
Steve Shepheard/Tom Smith in the Falken Tyres/Oztec Evo 6 Lancer will be driving a strategic event to hold off Glen Brinkman/Steve Richardson in the Silverstone Tyres Subaru WRX.

Challengers will include Paul Bergmann having a rare outing in 2006 and Ian Menzies/Bob McGowan in the V8 Falcon who will be looking for a change of luck at this event.

The Clubman field is led by Dave Ovenden/Cate Kelly in a tidy Mazda RX2, while other exotic entries include Peter Stewart/John Rutch in their 1989 Lancia Delta, Andrew Lord/Allan Reinikka in their Mitsubishi EX Lancer Turbo and Kelvin and Rodney Taylor in their BMW 325.

The event is scheduled for a respectable 8.40pm finish on the Gallangowan oval with the usual end-of-rally party following well into the early hours.

This is the penultimate round of the 2006 series, with the final event – the Bioganics Cooloola Classic Rally - scheduled for November 4.

An event report and results will feature on www.rallysportmag.com.au next week.
