Oreca Team driver, Teemu Suninen, has been confirmed by the FIA as the current leader of the WRC2 championship, notwithstanding that both Suninen and Ford driver, Elfyn Evans, are exactly equal on points, with one event to run.

Teemu SuninenBoth Suninen and Evans have fulfilled their maximum permitted number of entries in the championship (seven rounds, of which the best six scores count), but Skoda Motorsport’s official team driver, Esapekka Lappi, is able to score points on the final round, Rally Australia.

If Lappi finishes first or second in the WRC2 category in Australia his points total will overtake his two rivals and he will be champion.

Suninen and Evans have both scored three wins, one second, one third and one fourth, and each with one no-score.

The FIA has declared that the points tie between Suninen and Evans has been resolved by scoring the relative overall positions on the events in which they competed directly against each other.

This happened three times, in Portugal, Poland and Finland.  Neither driver scored points in Portugal, though Evans finished higher than Suninen.

On the other two events, Suninen gained more championship points than Evans.   Evans therefore loses his title chance by two results to one, while Suninen sits back and waits to hear Lappi’s result in Australia.
