Regular Queensland rally competitor, Claire Buccini, has teamed up with her circuit racing husband, Paul, for this weekend’s Targa Great Barrier Reef. It will be their first ever tarmac event and their first event as a team. The Buccinis are competing in their Brisbane Motorworks prepared BMW 135i, which Paul built from the ground up, with the intention of being able to compete in a Targa event “one day”. When Claire’s driver had to withdraw due to COVID-19 restrictions, they hastily made the decision to take the plunge. “The tarmac rally community have welcomed us with open arms and several teams have offered support, information and assistance to ensure it is a smooth event for us both,” Claire said. “Their input has been invaluable in making this event possible for us. “This really is a bucket list event for both of us, but especially for Paul, who was actually born in Mareeba on the Tablelands and lived the first 10 years of his life in Cairns, before moving to Brisbane.” Paul has many years of experience in street and circuit sprints and recently joined the Queensland Production Car Championship, however, he has never driven in a rally before. Claire competes in the Queensland Rally Championship, but has no experience on tarmac. “It has been a steep learning curve for us both and the pressure of teaching Paul about pacenotes and their purpose has been challenging,” Claire added. “However, after the first day of recce, Paul has gained some confidence and knowledge and we are looking forward to the event starting on Friday in Cairns.”
