The Golden Era, and why rallying needs manufacturers

Age has only one real advantage – hindsight! With 45+ years of interest in rallying, not “rally” as some of the young’uns call it, I think we are starting to see the end of the second Golden Age of rallying.

Familiar we all are with the first one; dominated by powerful rear-wheel drive sedans like Escorts, Datsuns and Fiats; the first Golden Age overtaken by Audi, Peugeot and Lancia in the 1980s.

The fateful death of Henri Toivonen and Sergo Cresta on May 2, 1986 ended the Group B era, and saw our sport returning to its roots of souped up road cars.
