The WRC entry list for next month’s Rally Australia has suffered a blow with Toyota confirming that they’ll only run a two-car team. 36-year old Juho Hanninen will miss the Coffs Harbour event - a rally he has not contested before.
Toyota’s decision to only send two Yaris WRCs to Australia is an interesting one, and could suggest that Wales Rally GB will be Hanninen’s last event for the Finnish-based squad.
There has been plenty of talk in recent times that current M-Sport driver, Ott Tanak, will sign for Toyota for the 2018 season. Tanak will be in Australia driving for M-Sport anyway, and at this stage is still in with a chance of winning the World Drivers’ Championship. Kennards Hire Rally Australia will see three-car teams from M-Sport, Hyundai and Citroen, with only Toyota sending a two-car squad. Hanninen is currently seventh in the WRC standings.
