Final round of the Canadian championship was the recent Big White Winter Rally, based at a ski resort in British Columbia. It was won by 10 times champion Antoine l’Estage’s Subaru WRX STi. The only non Subaru in the top 13 finishers was the third placed Mitsubishi of Latvian driver Maris Neiksans. = = = = 17-year old Kalle Rovanpera won the recent annual Memorial Bettega stadium race in Bologna, beating 16-year old Oliver Solberg, both at the wheel of old Pirelli sponsored Fiesta World Rally Cars. On his final run Oliver rolled his car. Teemu Suninen was third and the 17-year old Bolivian driver, Marco Bulacia, fourth. Eight invited drivers took part, in either Fiesta WRCs or old Hyundai i20 WRCs. The best placed Hyundai driver was Giandomenico Basso. Nine years ago at this event, Oliver’s father, Petter, was performing his lap of honour while standing on the roof of his moving Subaru when he slipped and fell, injuring a hand. = = = =

Russian ERC driver, Alexey Lukyanuk, went to Spain as a guest driver for the Suzuki importers' car on the Astorga Gravel Rally, which he won, accompanied by Portuguese co-driver Hugo Magalhaes. It is thought to be the debut of a Suzuki N5 car on gravel. = = = = Sebastier Ogier was the topic of a floodlit evening time public demonstration in the centre of his home town Gap, in which he arrived with M-Sport’s test Fiesta WRC car in the 2018 WRC livery. He was allowed to show his skills in the city’s main car park, presumably fulfilling a life time ambition! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMzFu7q5IwY = = = = Alexandre Coria, an amateur French co-driver, had a day of his dream when he co-drove Kris Meeke in a Citroen C3 WRC in Monte Carlo testing, which Paul Nagle was unable to attend due to weather delays. = = = = Hope springs eternal for a return to the World Rally Championship to Kenya! An official national Government Commission has been initiated ”to set up organisational structures with the hope of achieving full WRC status by 2020”. = = = = NOTE There will be no Weekend Rally News next weekend, but we wanted to leave you with reminder why rallying in Africa is traditionally a little different.
