Driving Molly Taylor's 2019 ARC Subaru WRX, Tasmanian Jason White has won the Australian Long Course Hillclimb Championship by topping the time sheets at Sunday's Poatina Mountain Race. The Launceston-based pair of Trevor Macleod and Steve Glenney, have taken out victory in the Poatina Mountain Rally category. White's highly modified Subaru WRX STI that was developed by the Orange Motorsport Engineering (OME) team in the driver-only hillclimb category, White repeatedly broke the outright course record and achieved the fastest single time of the event on each of the six stages (4:00.3), over the event’s 9km course snaking up the iconic Poatina Road from the picturesque village of Poatina. Finishing on the top step of the rally category podium, Macleod and Glenney, in a Nissan GT-R, won four stages, while Queenlanders Luke Anear and Al Stephensen claimed two stages and also clocked the quickest rally stage time in their brand-new Mercedes-AMG GT R. 21.7 seconds behind the winning pair was Launceston’s Adam Garwood and Bec Sheldrick in a V8-powered Ford Capri. Rounding out the top three was Porsche drivers Pete Nunn and Keith Johnstone, a further 6.2 seconds behind. “The OME Subaru was great but at 9km it’s a lot of road to try and remember,” White said. “A huge amount of work has recently been put into the car and we came here today to set a new benchmark. “Recent testing proved we would have pace but this long course format provided many unknowns with both engine temperatures and tyres” says Jason, a seven-time Targa Tasmania winner. Podium positions for second and third in the hillclimb category were not clear until the final stage of the day, with fellow Subaru driver Tim O’Connor, narrowly edging out Holden V8 driver Adrian Oliver, on the very last stage. “I’m extremely pleased with the fifth annual running of the southern hemisphere’s longest hillclimb event and proud that the national championship has gone to a home-grown favourite such as Jason” said Event Director Stuart Benson. “Feedback from competitors, spectators and the local community has been overwhelmingly positive and certainly assures a bright future of is very unique event.” Watch Jason White's incredible drive below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZKtg_xGJI0
