Last weekend’s Rallylegend event in Italy provided a fantastic group photograph with 10 WRC-winning drivers and four co-drivers who wrote stunning pages in the annals of rally history. Stig Blomqvist, Ari Vatanen, Timo Salonen, Juha Kankkunen, Miki Biasion, Didier Auriol, Marcus Gronholm, Petter Solberg, Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier were there, as were co-drivers Hans Thorszelius (Bjorn Waldegaard’s navigator), Luis Moya (representing Carlos Sainz), and Colin McRae’s co-drivers, Derek Ringer and Nicky Grist. It was a ‘cream-of-the-crop’ gathering to remember McRae − the Scotish hero who was tragically killed in 2007. McRae was represented by his family, mum and dad Margaret and Jimmy, daughter, Hollie, and brother Alister. The large crowd of spectators also included many drivers and champions competing at Rallylegend, including Kris Meeke (who was something of a ‘protege’ of Colin McRae’s in his early days), and Thierry Neuville. Sandro Munari and Simo Lampinen, two legendary figures from rallying’s ‘pioneering’ era, were also in attendance. The Colin McRae tribute included video testimony from Carlos Sainz, David Richards and Malcom Wilson, two team managers whose belief in McRae’s qualities was unshakeable, and Valentino Rossi, who considers Colin McRae an idol in the rally world. During the evening the “Champion Legend” award went to Colin McRae, and was received by Hollie McRae, Colin’s 19-year-old daughter.
