Series sponsor, Peter Wrench, from RallyDrive, will line up for his first rally in an Excel at the Victorian Rallydrive Hyundai Rally Series at the 2008 George Derrick Memoral sprint rally this weekend.

Wrench will replace Team Hyundai regular Paul Batten, who will be in Sydney attending World Youth Day celebrations.

Wrench has been involved in rallying for over 15 years. He competed in the UK and Europe and has won many overall and class awards. Wrench’s passion is now running Rallydrive, where he gets his rally fix taking customers for wild sideways rides in one of their WRX STI’s.

“It’s going to be a little different,” said Wrench. “I haven’t competed in a rally for eight years and that was back in England, so I’m looking forward to getting back behind the wheel in a competitive environment. The Excels are great little carw, - the first time I drove one I couldn’t believe how well they handled and performed. I am that impressed we have two cars under construction at the moment and we will be running a Rallydrive two-car team in next year’s Excel championship.

Wrench will drive Batten’s 2007 Championship winning Excel at the George Derrick Rally. This car was part of a Team Hyundai one-two after winning the event last year with guest driver and former Australian Rally Campion, Geoff Portman, at the wheel. NSW driver Mick Gillett finishing second in the other Hyundai Factory Excel.

“We’re looking for another top performance from our crew in the Excel rally car at this year’s rally,” said Kangan Batman TAFE’s Greg Moulden.

Hyundai Motor Company Australia has commissioned Kangan Batman TAFE to run its Victorian rally program since 2006. The TAFE’s motorsport students built the team’s series winning Excel in 2006 and are responsible for all pre-event preparation and on event servicing.

With almost 40 Hyundais competing across Australia in these state-based, one-make rally series’, Hyundai is showing the way forward with affordable technology in Australia’s toughest proving  ground - rallying.
