The promoters of the popular Mt Buller and Lake Mountain Sprints, Peter Washington and Tim McNeilly, spurred on by the success of their 2006 events, have announced that they have added a third mountain sprint to their program next year.
A new addition to the calendar will be the Lake Mountain Tango, a 3-day, 11-run event that will run both up and down the Lake Mountain Tourist Road near Marysville in Victoria on the Australia Day long weekend, January 26-28. This new event should prove very attractive to the many competitors whose program is normally quiet at that time of the year.
Then on May 12 and 13, the second Lake Mountain Sprint will be held, this time running up the mountain only, but still providing competitors with eight timed runs over the two days. Completing the mountain calendar will be the traditional Mt Buller Sprint on the Melbourne Cup weekend of November 3-5. The recent Mt Buller event trialled the Cup weekend instead of the Australia Day weekend, and it was found to be more popular with competitors, thanks to the cooler conditions at that time of year.
Intending competitors should note that there are significant 'early bird' discounts available prior to January 16 for those wishing to contest the three events.
