Classic Rally South Africa has moved its date and will now run from January 26-30 next year in an effort to land a bigger entry for the history-making event.
The decision to make the change to the Mpumalanga-based event was taken following a rally organisers’ meeting in Johannesburg late last week. The low number of entries had made the original September date unworkable and not sufficiently interesting for those entered.
The route for the event remains unchanged as do the regulations regarding which cars are eligible for Classic Rally South Africa. There will, however, be a class included for South African National cars which conform with Motorsport South Africa (MSA) regulations. This class will run 20 to 30 minutes behind the Classic rally cars, to allow competitors in the South African National Rally Championship a testing opportunity before their National series starts in March 2015.
Classic Rally South Africa is a completely new rally for cars produced before the end of 1985. The event, which runs for five days and will include 720 competitive kilometres, is based in forests close to the Kruger National Park.

Classic Rally South Africa founder Surinder Thatthi said: “We consulted with potential entrants from Europe and were advised there would be more competitors coming to compete if we were running in January. We have now made the decision to move the date to January, which means mid-summer in South Africa – offering European competitors a great chance to escape the cold winter with a fantastic rally.
“What we want to see now are all the people out there who said they would come to us in January doing just that. The route we have planned is exceptional. The infrastructure we had planned for the rally remains in place, but we now have another four months to polish everything and make sure the event is even better than it would have been in September.”
