DustTrails, Episode 23: Macneall’s co-driving experiences

With over 100 WRC starts to his name and more than 300 rallies under his belt, Glenn Macneall is Australia’s most decorated co-driver.

Having begun his career by winning the inaugural Daihatsu Challenge alongside Leigh Hynes, the West Australian quickly made his mark and climbed the co-driving ranks.

He sat beside his boyhood idol, Greg Carr, in a works Hyundai, then teamed up with international stars Greg Graham and ‘Monster’ Tajima.

Bigger things beckoned however, and Macneall’s step into the big time came with a nine-event WRC program alongside Toshi Arai with the Subaru World Rally Team.

The Subaru theme continued when he partnered great mate, Dean Herridge, in the factory team in Australia, before he spent almost two seasons with Australia’s great WRC hope, Chris Atkinson.

Since the mid-2000s he’s had a long association with India’s Gaurav Gill, guided Nathan Quinn to a top 10 finish at Rally Australia on the local’s World Rally Car debut, and helped foster young Japanese hopeful Hiroki Arai – the son of Toshi.

Most recently, Macneall guided Scott Pedder to a stage win at the recent Gippsland Rally and will compete again with the Victorian as a course car at this weekend’s Adelaide Hills Rally.

His major focus may now be business rather than co-driving, but he still has plenty to give.

In our exclusive DustTrails podcast, Glenn chats to Peter Whitten about his stellar rallying career, and what the future holds.

It’s a must-listen for all rally fans and historians.
