The 2018 MRF Akademos Rally was one to forget for Gunnawyn Motorsport, with both its Fiestas failing to complete the eight-stage event. A troubled lead-up set the tone, the Fiesta R2 of Viv Dilkes-Frayne/Tracey Dewhurst having last-minute mechanical dramas, the pair running out of fuel during recce and the service truck suffering a flat tyre en-route to the event. Worse was to come, the Fiesta R1 of Scott Newman/Adam Davis cruelly spluttering to a halt just 4.5km into SS1, their rally over before it had barely begun thanks to the Fiesta’s electrical gremlins returning at the worst possible moment. Dilkes-Frayne/Dewhurst battled engine dramas and a broken gear lever all rally, but valiantly drove on until the R2 expired on the long uphill climb of SS7, a frustrating end to a rally that promised so much, with fantastic roads and great weather. The team will now take stock and attempt to find the source of its mechanical issues ahead of the season-ending George Derrick Rally on November 24, before turning its attention to the 2019 motorsport calendar. Our thanks to the officials and organising team that made 2018 Akademos Rally possible.
