The Australia is just 15.5 seconds behind World Champion Sebastien Loeb, and a commanding 30 seconds clear of sixth placed Daniel Carlsson.
The Fords of Marcus Gronholm and Mikko Hirvonen lead the rally, with Subaru's Petter Solberg third.
