It’s not often that books on rallying are released and even less often that books of this magnitude on rallying are released. So it was a surprise when a 360-page book entitled “The Welsh Rally” turned up on our desk.

As the title suggests, the book tells the story of that iconic event which began back in 1964 and ran, in various forms including as an International rally up until the present day.

Authors Mark Griffin and Martin Leonard have painstakingly put together a stunning history of the Welsh which covers every event ever run and which is liberally sprinkled with the memories of all of the major participants – drivers, co-drivers, service crew members, organizers, sponsors, officials and so on.

Those 360 pages make not only for fascinating reading but for browsing as well – the book is full of hundreds of atmospheric action photos in colour and black and white. Readers will be fascinated by the array of photos that do a sensational job of describing the appeal of the Welsh Rally over the years.

All the leading drivers (Vatanen, Mikkola, Jimmy McRae, Malcolm Wilson, Waldegard, Blomqvist – the list goes on) tell their stories and their experiences on what has been until recently one of the most popular rallies on the UK calendar. And if you’re a facts and figures person, you will find full entry lists of each event, plus the outright results from 1964 until 2010.

You should check your local motoring bookshop to see if this splendid book is available locally. For further info on the book check out: www.griffinrally.com.

The RRP is £40 which makes it an expensive book, but to this reviewer it is worth every cent just for the photos alone.
