Tony Sullens has taken an incredible 2.1 second victory in the Caves Classic Rally, driving his front-wheel drive Citroen DS3. Sullens and co-driver Kalie Newell had trailed Mal Keough and Pip Bennett in their Audi Quattro S1 replica going into the final stage, but put in a blinder to take the win. Sullens, a former Targa Tasmania winner, won three of the rally's nine stages, and took second on two others in dry and dusty conditions. Keough's speed was a surprise to many, but he won the first stage and took second on five others. He led home top seeds Tom Clarke and Jim Gleeson by 9.1 seconds in their Lancer Evo 9. Bathurst's Ron Moore took a strong fourth in his Lancer Evo 6, while the irrepressible Nathan Quinn had a consistent day to take fifth place in his Mazda RX2. The top 10 was rounded out by Tim Joass (Lancer), Chris Giddins (Lancer), Bethany Cullen (Lancer), Chris Jaques (Lancer), and young gun Taylor Gill in a Subaru. Retirements included Justin Griffin (Toyota Corolla) with mechanical problems, Andrew Penny (Subaru) with technical issues, and Jamie Neale who crashed his Honda Civic on the first stage. The rally was the second round of the NSW Rally Championship, was based at Oberon, near Bathurst, and was conducted by the North Shore Sporting Car Club. A full event report will follow.
