The 500 Car Club of Tasmania hosted the Apple Valley Rally on the outskirts of Port Huon Tasmania last weekend. As a pacenoted gravel rally, the event saw 10 rally crews fight it out on the day.

Sam Button, along with his co-driver Nathan Walker in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 3, was the winner of the day, followed closely by Dave Oates and co-driver Darren Lovell (Datsun 1600) taking second.

The rally saw local North West crew Kurt Wylie and Matt Best crash out in the first stage, when their Subaru WRX ended up over a bank. The car had to later be craned out (see photo) and transported back into the service area. Both Kurt and Matt walked away unharmed, but the Subaru WRX is in need of some repairs before the next Tasmanian Rally Series round.

Bill Cromarty and co-driver Hugh Maslin also took part in the Apple Valley Rally in there Lancer LB, testing the car before heading off to compete in Coffs Harbour under the classic section.

Overall the day was a great success and now the focus turns to the third round of the Tasmanian Rally Series, the ‘Kevin Shaw Southern Safari” on August 16 in Maydena.
