The role of the AEC is to define and implement strategies to ensure that the development and management of alternative energies is viable in Australian motor sport.
The committee is chaired by Chris Selwood, Event Director of the internationally famous World Solar Challenge.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for motor sport to play an integral role in exploring technological advances in non-traditional energies, while at the same time ensuring that motor sport remains possible in a future constrained by rising oil costs,” said Selwood.
“Reducing motor sport’s carbon footprint is important and it is pleasing to see that CAMS is not only conscious of its ecological obligations, but that it’s leading the way in establishing a more environmentally friendly motor sport.”
The Australian Rally Championship already contains capacity for alternatively powered vehicles with competition for the Alternative Energies and Hybrid Cup. There is also significant interest in electronically powered vehicles for club level motor sport competition.
CAMS CEO Graham Fountain said he is enthused about the ongoing evolution of the AEC.
“This provides a real opportunity for Australian motor sport to accelerate the development of green technologies,” said Fountain.
“The Alternative Energies Committee showcases our commitment to take the sport into the future to the benefit of both the membership and the wider community.”
CAMS is now seeking expressions of interest from the motor sport and environmental community to form the committee’s membership. The AEC requires four general committee members for annual appointment starting in 2008.
Desirable attributes of AEC members include (but are not limited to) skills, knowledge and experience in:
- Alternative Fuels;
- Electric and Electronics, in particular batteries;
- Knowledge of CAMS and FIA rules and policies;
- Motor sport competition;
- Demonstrated entrepreneurial development of motor sport.
