Despite a maximum attack effort in his Total Traction Service/FSport-sponsored and Kumho shod Hyundai Excel on the Bay Stages Rally on October 15, young Canberra driver Adrian Coppin has conceded the 2010 NSW Excel title to defending Champion, Dave Roberts.
“The 2010 NSW RallySchool.com.au Excel Rally series is gone. I gave it a serious crack this year but it wasn’t quite enough,” Coppin said. “I would like to congratulate Dave on defending his title,” he added.
After 125 kilometres of second for second competition, Roberts’ knowledge of his local forests proved decisive and he beat Coppin by just over 60 seconds.
The final round of the Series is to be contested on the north coast of NSW on October 23 but Coppin has decided to sit the event out so he concentrate on his landscaping business.
“I’ve been spending too much time on my rallying lately and neglected the business a bit so I need to focus on that for a while as it pays my rally bills,” he said.
Coppin has decided to put his efforts into a final hit out for 2010 in the Excel National Cup being held as part of the final Australian Rally Championship (ARC) round, Rally Victoria on the weekend of November 13 and 14.
The event will feature 10 forest stages covering 172 competitive kilometres in the Noojee/Nerrim area of south eastern Victoria. This area, located approximately 100 km east of Melbourne, hasn’t been used in the ARC since the 1970’s
“If I can win the Excel National Cup in my first event on pace notes, and in my debut year, 2010 will have exceeded my wildest dreams,” Coppin commented.
For 2011, Coppin is working on a budget to allow him to debut a very fast front wheel drive 'screamer' in a major series.
