Canberra rally driver Adrian Coppin won the 4th round of the RallySchool.com.au Hyundai Rally series at Bathurst on Saturday, driving his Total Traction Services/FSport sponsored and Kumho shod Hyundai Excel
The result also allowed Coppin to reduce the point’s gap to current series leader, Dave Robert to just 1 point.
With reigning ACT Rally Champion, Michael Barrett as his co-driver, Coppin was 2 minutes and 4 seconds in arrears of series leader Roberts after 6 competitive stages.
“Dave had the wood on me in the first 6 stages” Coppin said. “I knew I had to have a big go in the first of the 2 long stages or it was all over” he added.
A very fast run through the first long stage, Sherwood Forest saw Coppin emerge some 3 minutes and 25 seconds faster than Roberts. The run secured the round win despite Roberts winning back 17 seconds in the final stage.
Coppin is earning widespread respect for his efforts in the diminutive Hyundai Excel in only his first season of rallying. Dave Roberts is the reigning Hyundai champion and has several years in the series with the Excel’s.
“To be pushing a guy like Dave in a category he has been competing in for several years in only my 8th rally feels really good” Adrian said. “I started this year expecting to be nowhere. I have surprised myself with my pace and will keep pushing to the end of the year before I assess my options for stepping up in 2011” he said.
The next round of the series will be held as part of the Bay Stages Rally to be held on the NSW south coast on 16 October 2010.
